The Allure of Twitter: 5 Tips for Businesses in Qatar

by · October 2, 2012

Consider this, there are nearly 60,000 users from Qatar on Twitter, and Arabic is the fastest growing language on that platform. Not surprisingly, many companies in Doha are already using or at least considering Twitter for building brand awareness, online public relations, getting customer feedback, and even leads. Yet just like any other social media platform, Twitter can be a crowded place, and to get great results for your business, you have to get noticed first.

At ictQATAR we use Twitter for many reasons – to drive website visits, promote news from our multiple departments, safeguard telecom consumer rights through our @ictQATARvoice account, and just to connect and be social with others. Our tribe has grown over the years, and we gained a few insights along the way. Here are our top five:

1.Stay consistent. Decide what purpose Twitter will serve, what your value add is and how you are going to manage the account a year from now. You have to set expectations about how many times per day you are going to tweet, and stick with the plan no matter what. Your tactics may change overtime, but your strategy shouldn’t. If you set out to tweet 5 time per week, you shouldn’t switch to ten overnight just because you are getting pressure from your management.

2.Tell stories. To spark genuine interest about a particular product or service you have to tell stories that stick. We all remember that for every pair of shoes you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child. But would you have remembered this brand if the shoes were merely promoted as “comfortable shoes formerly used by Argentinean farmers”? Probably not.

3.Pull some rabbits out of your hat. Tweeting about the same topic daily can be on your marketing calendar, but most likely, it will bore your followers, and cause them to ditch you. Find different ways how to engage your followers – post photos, videos, reward retweeters, and create intrigue with interesting polls – people love to share their opinions and be challenged. Better yet, offer something tangible, like discounts.

4.Integrate. Connect Twitter to other social media, forums, blogs, email and websites that you own. Make it easy for people to find and share your content, and it will become amplified through multiple channels and help you show higher return on investment. Plus, your multi-channel customer is always worth more than a single channel.

5.Be social. Hopefully, we convinced you that there is more to Twitter than broadcasting your latest PR releases and announcing new product launches. The real magic happens when people connect to people – be authentic, share photos of your team, occasionally wish people a good weekend.

Fall is a great time to start tweeting, after a restful summer, people have settled into their routines, and are ready for new conversations. What are you waiting for?

How do you unleash your Twitter superpowers? Over to you.
