Now that the cheering and hype for the London 2012 Olympics is over, the cleaning up and reassessing begins. This Olympics was hailed as a truly social media extravaganza so who were the social media winners and what were the scores? The Games kicked off with just less than 3 million tweets on day one of the Olympics on July 27th according to statistics from the social media monitoring platform, Salesforce Radian6.

Sporting personalities that won Olympic Social Media Gold include Usain Bolt with nearly a million mentions, closely followed by Michael Phelps and British diver tom Daley in third position, reflecting the same trends and more typical news outlets.

Marketing managers at big branded companies are also celebrating social media medals. McDonalds scored a huge social media buzz with nearly 160,000 mentions over the 17 day event. Coca Cola and Visa were second and third respectively but with far lower statistics. Big winners in the sports category for social media buzz were football with 725,000 mentions, closely followed by basketball with 710,000 and then volleyball.

Radian6 takes into account over 150 million sources including Twitter, Facebook, blogs, YouTube and message boards. They say they employ a broad search criteria coupled with specific targeting words such as London 2012 to ensure the sports chatter they capture relates specifically to the Games.
