Next time on Flog your Blog – Being Socially Networked!
Most people are aware how to post a link to their blog on Facebook and Twitter, for many that is as far as their blog promotion goes. But it is not enough in today’s competitive Internet marketplace. As a Social Media Trainer and Mentor based in the UK, I specialize in working with SMEs to teach them how to make more sales from social media. I produce an online training program called “Social Media Prospector for Twitter” which is a complete insider’s guide to how you can use Twitter to drive a consistent stream of leads and sales to your business. Similarly, follow my guide to ensure a constant stream of visitors to your blog.
With so much web content available it is unlikely your blog will be read by more than a handful of people, therefore you should be doing everything possible to publicize and promote your content and social bookmarking is an excellent way of doing this.
Social networking versus social bookmarking?
It can be difficult to understand the difference between social bookmarking and social networking but social networking, via sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest etc give users a way to communicate and share information such as blogs, images and videos online in real time. However, social bookmarking is simply online sharing of website pages with the facility to add comments and likes. Both social networking and bookmarking result in the building of online communities and are extremely valuable in terms of boosting your online visibility.
If you’re currently sharing your blog posts on social networking sites, kudos to you, but by adding in social bookmarking you will give yourself a very powerful marketing mix! There are lots of social bookmarking sites, the most popular are Stumble Upon, Digg, Delicious and Reddit.
The easy route to social bookmarking
The easiest way to enable social bookmarking of your blog posts is to add the appropriate links with their corresponding icons to each blog post. This will enable sharing via the most popular social bookmarking sites because the easier you make it for people to share, the more likely they are to do so.
If your website is built on WordPress, there’s a plethora of free plugins available to add any combination of social networking and bookmarking icons to each and every post and page of your site… with very little technical know-how required.
If you don’t use WordPress, then some technical knowledge will be needed in order to add the icons and links to the code of your blog and make them appear in the correct places, therefore you might need to get outside assistance from a web developer if you don’t have any coding knowledge yourself.
The added benefits
Social sharing via bookmarking sites is here to stay – Google says so! Already, social sharing is influencing search results. Google looks at content your friends have shared and prioritizes their shared content in searches you run while logged in to Google. Running the same search when logged out of Google will produce very different results. Google is already working with social bookmarking sites, so if you’re not taking advantage of their potential for your blog, you could be missing out! Why not get started today?!
Let me give you a very simple example of a call to action: If you enjoyed this blog, please do share it with your friends!
